How to craft it
Open the workbench in the Haven, choose Recipes, and select Charcoal to lay out the pattern. You can also place the ingredients by hand anywhere in the 3×3 grid; the shape matters, but its position does not.
When to make it
Four raw logs return two charcoal. That first batch divides neatly between a torch and a campfire, provided the required sticks and stone are also ready. It is a costly early conversion, so avoid using wood reserved for a boat or bed frame.
Gather fuel separately from ordinary construction supplies. Making charcoal should not remove the wood needed for shelter or travel during the journey where it will be used.
